A friend made the jest about quitting her day job to work on a particularly challenging movement skill. It’s a nice consideration, being able to drop everything to work on that one thing you want to work on, but it’s unrealistic for a number of reasons. Forget about the money aspect. When you throw yourself into a project with the intention of doing the damn thing until you do the damn thing, you actually set yourself back in your progress. Over the long term, you may potentially gain traction, but that’s a big “maybe.” Yes, we’re creatures of endurance, but ultimately, we need rest.

So what are you to do? You want to get good at doing this one thing, whatever it is. How can you get good at it if you’re unable to devote your every waking moment to it?

Simple. You set aside time every day to work on the damn thing. Maybe it’s ten minutes, maybe it’s an hour, but you commit to showing up, and then you show up, every single day.

In the end, it’s not the sheer volume of time you contribute to doing the damn thing, but the consistency in the work you do toward the damn thing. Little by little, a little becomes a lot. The time will pass anyway, it’s what you do with that time that matters.

So, what are you waiting for? No time like right now to decide how much and how often you’ll dedicate to doing the damn thing. And then show up. Because it’s all just work.
